The American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (AAAA) is a not-for-profit national association comprised of more than 300 attorneys who practice adoption law and have distinguished themselves in the field of adoption law.

The AAAA promotes adoption law reform and distributes information concerning ethical adoption practices. In addition, they help to educate their members and keep them abreast of all changes to adoption law. This includes publishing a newsletter, holding annual meetings, and hosting educational seminars. 

Membership in the AAAA is not a cattle call. Every attorney that is counted in their membership is invited. They have all handled a minimum of 50 adoption cases, including 10 interstate placements. Every member is expected to maintain their practice according to the highest standards of ethics, competence, and professionalism.

As a not-for-profit organization, they have various committees dedicated to the improvement of adoption laws and ethical practices. These committees cover everything from assisted reproduction to birth parents. They are also dedicated to protecting the rights of children.

In addition to their education efforts aimed at their members, the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys files amicus briefs with various courts nationally. These briefs are meant to influence the decisions of judges by point out facts that the AAAA finds salient. Also, the AAAA’s members participate in both national and state legislation activities. They also offer expert testimony to legislators and assist in drafting new laws pertaining to adoption.

The American Academy of Adoption Attorneys has members located in the majority of the states. The website for the AAAA provides an online directory of all members that it deems capable of representing individuals in adoption cases.
